As a rule you should always have in your car or where ever you travel some sort of emergency bag, take it one step further. Compile in addition to the normal first aid items one would have, a small backpack filled with items that if caught out in the elements would aid in saving your life. Always dress warmer than you need to. You can if required remove stuff and carry it rather than wish you had bought it. The jacket you looked at in the closet while making your last check before leaving might be the difference between not hearing the latest forecast where cold temps are expected over night. Having an extra set of clothing in a bag along with items to navigate (compass) matches, small knife, and other essential items will place you ahead of the curve rather than behind it.
